The purpose of this workbook is to gather together a technical and objective description of some of the current research methods and mathematical models developed and/or used in Europe. Each method is described according to the saure sections, particularly in terras of how it can be set up, its advantages and its drawbacks.
The different sections of the book begin with an introduction chapter to provide the reader with comparisons and guidance on the proposed methods. The introduction chapter provides an overview of the behaviour of pesticides in soil and the environment.
It is hoped that these research methods and mathematical models will be widely used so as to learn more about the fate of pesticides and to plan ahead with respect to soil and water pollution as well as for preparing future European guidelines for pesticides registration.
Juan Cornejo has a PhD degree in Chemistry and is Professor of Soil Sciences at the Instituto de Recursos Naturales y Agrobiologia de Sevilla (IRNAS) pertaining to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC -Spanish Council for Scientific Research). He is the responsible scientist of several research projects (European projects, Spanish Governement and Andalucia Governement projects) dealing mainly with "Dynamics of pesticides in soifs" and "Properties of clays and organo-mineral associations". He is presently the Director of the IRNAS, Sevilla (Spain).
Paul Jamet, an agricultural engineer, Research Director at the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) in France, studied
the behaviour of pesticides in soil at the Departement of Phytopharmacy and Ecotoxicology at Versailles. In 1992 he joined the INRA International Relations Division and from 1993 he chaired the COST Action 66 'Tate of pesticides in the soil and the environment" which brought together scientiste from 18 European Countries.
He is presently the INRA Delegate for European Affaire and National Contact Point for the European thematic programme "Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources".
