Since the reign of Louis XIV a few centuries ago, France has remained the most renowned fashion empire in the world.
If fashion is a reflection of society, then jewelry as an industry can be considered a barometer measuring its social development. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Shanghai is honored to join the Maison Van Cleef & Arpels in bringing to China "Timeless Beauty", a retrospective spanning more than one hundred years of jewelry design.
Embodying the brilliance of the last century the exhibition seeks to re-evaluate and redefine our contemporary views of ppreciation. This is the first time that MoCA Shanghai has focused on jewelry, with an artistic exhibition that tells the story behind the Maison's centennial of creative designs and cultural legacy.
Since its opening at the Place Vendôme in Paris in 1906, Van Cleef &Arpels has played a leading role in the development of the Art of jewelry design. "Beauty is of the moment, yet poetry is everlasting".
The collection of more than four hundred celebrated pieces and heritage drawings left me with the Maison's poetic vision of an enchanted world. Nurtured by the richness of culture and art, the designers of Van Cleef & Arpels brought forth an endless source of creativity and inspiration.
They created works of exquisite, elegant, majestic and ingenious designs, brought to life by the jewelers' virtuosity in craftsmanship. The Maison's Mystery Setting technique invented in 1933 propelled Van Cleef & Arpels' craftsmanship to the apex of the industry, making it a revered icon in the history of jewelry design.
